Jan Kavan, B.Sc., CH, IOM
Born 17 October 1946 in London. A student leader of the 1960s, Mr.Kavan had to emigrate to England in 1969.There he studied at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), at St.Antony´s College, Oxford University and at University of Reading.
Mr.Kavan founded the Palach Press Agency that served as the main press agency for human rights movement Charter 77. Founded the Jan Palach Information and Research Trust (JPIRT), the East European Cultural Foundation (EECF) and the prestigious quarterly the East European Reporter.
Returned to Prague in November 1989 and was elected to the Federal Assembly (Parliament, 1990-92). Minister of Foreign Affairs (1998-2002) and Deputy Prime Minister (1999-2002). President of the United Nations General Assembly (2002-3). Senator (1996-2000), Deputy Chairman of Foreign Affairs Committee of the Parliament (2002-2006) and foreign policy adviser to the President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament (2007- 9). Assistant to Jaroslav Foldyna, MP (2014- ), Member of the Executive Board of the European Leadership Network for Multilateral Disarmament (2010- ). Member of the Academic Council of New Forum (Gorbachev Foundation) (2010- ). Vice-President of the CSSD Seniors (2015- ). Chairman of the Board of Czech-Slovak-Iranian Chamber of Commerce (2015- ).
Visiting Professor of Politics and History at Adelphi University (New York) and at Amherst College (Massachusettes). Honorary Fellow at the LSE and Honorary Doctor of Humane letters at Adelphi University, New York. Received a number of international awards such as Companion of Honor or International Order of Merit.
