Pavel Seifter was Czech Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1997 to 2003. Until his recent retirement, he was a visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Global Governance and at the Department of International Development, LSE. He started his career as a lecturer in contemporary and labour history at Charles University, Prague. After the Soviet invasion in 1968 he worked as a window cleaner, and as a Charter 77 signatory took part in dissident activities. He returned to academia in 1990 as co-founder of the Institute of Contemporary History in Prague and later became deputy director of the Institute of International Relations. Between 1993 and 1997 he was Head of President Vaclav Havel’s foreign policy department.
